"If you go down to the woods today..."

Went wandering in a wood at the weekend looking for signs of long-eared owls and as I wandered up a track I spied a funny bit of metal poking out of the ground. I flicked it with my boot and jumped back as I realised it was a mortar! I gave it a wide berth and asked advice.

When I went back to get a GPS grid ref for it this evening before phoning for the bomb squad, I realised that the end was full of muck and so it was spent and no danger to anyone: panic over. I hung around for a while hoping to listen for owls but apart from the brief 'chisSICK' of a hungry tawny owl chick all I could hear was heavy rain, gurgling streams and dripping from every tree.
